Earlier this month, Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino announced his nation's decision to withdraw from China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The decision comes amidst mounting U.S. concerns over China's growing influence in Panama, particularly around the Panama Canal, a critical global trade route. These developments put in peril the six-year Panamanian balancing act between fostering ties with China and maintaining its historic relationship with the United States.
