Social media platform TikTok is facing major new regulatory hurdles this week, as the European Union, Canada and the United States announced bans of TikTok on official devices.

In a letter sent last week, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) wrote to Treasury Secretary and Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) Chair Janet Yellen about concerns with TikTok.

Two U.S. Senators have introduced legislation to ban TikTok from operating in the United States.

The U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee held a hearing yesterday on "Combatting the Economic Threat from China." Issues that were discussed at the hearing included: bilateral trade, outbound and inbound investment related to China, Chinese lending, TikTok, and China's presence in Latin American

There have been a number of recent developments on actions by the U.S. federal government related to TikTok, including newly introduced legislation to ban it nationwide, a new House Committee scrutinizing TikTok, and upcoming testimony before a House committee by TikTok's CEO.

In the past week, more U.S. states have taken action to prohibit the use of TikTok and other Chinese-linked products and services on state electronic devices. And in Congress, there have been calls for hearings on TikTok.

Three more U.S. states, as well as the U.S. Senate, have now taken action to ban the use of TikTok by government employees.
